‘Dear Motorist’

This initiative called ‘Dear Motorist’ was started by a group in my home state of Rhode Island. It’s a video of cyclists writing letters to drivers, asking them to be careful and to know that people who ride bikes are also friends, siblings, parents, etc. and that when motorists are not alert drivers, motorists put cyclists at risk. The video mainly portrays a certain type of cyclist – namely recreational road cyclists in jerseys – and most of the scenes show that kind of riding as well. I wish that the video also addressed that not all people ride bikes for recreation, some people ride because it is the most economic choice or because there are no other options for transporting themselves, and that their lives have equal value.

What do you think of this video? Do you agree with this tactic? Do you think this type of emotional plea will be effective?
